Die Platte der Woche kommt von den Nilotika Cultural Ensemble x Ancient Astronauts aus Kampala. Sounds of Subterrania empfiehlt dazu den Genuss eines JFK Harris.

01. Nilotika Cultural Ensemble x Ancient Astronauts – Collectors Box (Votava)
Normalerweise wollte ich die Reihe nicht für 7inchs öffnen, schließlich kippt man sich den Fusel ja nicht in 3 Minuten hinter die Binde. Aber bei dieser 7inch mache ich sehr gerne eine Ausnahme. Grund 1: Der Mann hinter diesem Release ist Julian Rentzsch, Illustrator und Grafiker aus Hamburg. Julian gestaltete für mich das Artwork von Bibi Ahmed und seine Arbeiten begeistern mich jedes mal aufs Neue. Genau wie ich ist er besessen von kleinen versteckten Details und sein skizzenhafter Strich entwickelt eine ungeheure Dynamik . Grund 2: Gutes Tun. Diese Platte supporten das Nilotika Cultural Ensemble aus Uganda! Die Crew um Jajja Kalanda organisiert Sozial- und Kulturarbeit in den benachteiligten Vierteln in Kampala. Sie geben Anleitung in Workshops; bringen den Jugendlichen Schneidern und die Technik des traditionellen Niyabingi-Drumming bei. Grund 3: Die Platte ist aufwendig gestaltet. Sie enthält einen exklusiven, signierten Druck der Münchener Graffiti Legende Loomit, sowie einen Kunstdruck von Patrick Thomas – Professor an der ABK-Stuttgart. Außerdem gibt es eine handgenähte Afro Bag vom Nilotika Culture Ensemble selbst. Die Single selbst kommt in einem Gatefold-Cover und die Umverpackung ist aufwendig geprägt. Grund 4: Diese Platte ist auf 100 Stück limitiert. Grund 5: Natürlich die Musik. Der Track des Nilotika Cultural Ensemble verbindet traditionelle Niyabingi Percussion mit melodischen Rap-Vocals von Spyda MC. Gerappt wird sowohl auf Englisch als auch auf Luganda, der Landessprache. Die Kölner Produzenten Ancient Astronauts (seit mehr als 20 Jahren aktiv) haben für die B-Seite einen Remix von diesem Track abgeliefert.
Die Songs sind absolut Dancefloor tauglich, also denkt darüber nach, es euer eigen zu nennen, denn die Erlöse aus dem Verkauf der Box fließen in den direkten Support des Nilotika Kollektivs.

02. Palmiyeler – Ben-Hür LP (Green Cookie)
Wenn man in Deutschland über türkische Musik spricht, dann zumeist nur von der traditionellen Spielart. Daß dies in keinster Weise der türkischen Szene gerecht wird, beweist dieses Meisterwerk an relaxtem Psychpop. Um es gleich zu sagen, ich bin verliebt in den Instanbuler Vierer. Nach den ersten Tönen hatte ich Max Groundstroem’s Band Samling im Ohr, also nicht die amerikanische California-Sunshine Variante, sondern vielmehr die melancholische Midsummer-Adaption. Alle Töne sind perfekt minimalisiert und lassen viel Raum zum Träumen und Schwelgen. Gegründet hat sich Palmiyeler, bevor Barış Konyalı zur Band stoß, als Trio. Als Trio veröffentlichen auch Sänger / Gitarristen Mertcan Mertbilek, Bassist Tarık Töre und Schlagzeugerin Rana Uludağ 2015 ihre ersten Songs. Green Cookie hat nun diverse Singles und 2 neue Stücke zu ihrem dritten Album zusammen.

03. V/A – Alan Lomax's American Patchwork (Mississippi)
Was für eine Bisonherde an Werk. Aber von vorne. Alan (* 31. Januar 1915; † 19. Juli 2002) war ein amerikanischer Folklore und Musikforscher. Seine Karriere widmete Lomax vollständig dem Sammeln volkstümlicher Musik überall auf der Welt, insbesondere aber im Süden der Vereinigten Staaten. Von 1978 bis 1983 reisten Lomax und ein Videoteam durch den amerikanischen Süden und Südwesten und dokumentierten die traditionelle Musik. Er dokumentierte den Sound von Bergleuten und Schwarzbrennern, den primitiven Gesang der Baptisten aus Kentucky, String-Bands und Piedmont-Blues aus North Carolina, Cajun-Cowboys mit ihren Geigen und Zydeco-Stompers aus dem französischsprachigen Louisiana, Gospel-Quartette und Gesänge der Schienenverleger und Dammbauer. Dieses Filmmaterial dauerte letztendlich rund 350 Stunden und wurde in Lomax '"American Patchwork" -Serie bearbeitet, die 1991 im amerikanischen öffentlich-rechtlichen Fernsehen ausgestrahlt wurde. Angesichts der zeitlichen Einschränkungen des Formates blieben jedoch Hunderte Performances und überzeugenden Szenen unsichtbar und ungehört.
Diese Doppel LP vereint einige der herausragenden Aufnahmen, die Lomax gemacht hat, dokumentiert die letzten Überreste einer vergangenen Zeit in Mississippi, Appalachia und Louisiana. Intime Auftritte von R. L. Burnside, Tommy Jarrell, Boyd Rivers, Napoleon Strickland und vielen anderen, neu überarbeitet von Timothy Stollenwerk und nie zuvor auf Vinyl veröffentlicht.

01. Nilotika Cultural Ensemble x Ancient Astronauts – Collectors Box (Votava)
Normally I didn't want to open the row for 7 inches, after all, you don't belt down the booze in 3 minutes. But I like to make an exception with this 7inch. Reason 1: The man behind this release is Julian Rentzsch, illustrator and graphic designer from Hamburg. Julian designed Bibi Ahmed's artwork for me and his work inspires me every time anew. Just like me, he is obsessed with small hidden details and his sketchy lines develop a tremendous dynamic. Reason 2: Doing good. This record supports the Nilotika Cultural Ensemble from Uganda! Jajja Kalanda's crew organizes social and cultural work in the disadvantaged neighborhoods in Kampala. They give guidance in workshops; teach tailoring and the technique of traditional niyabingi drumming to young people. Reason 3: The record is elaborately designed. It contains an exclusive, signed print of the Munich graffiti legend Loomit, as well as an art print by Patrick Thomas - professor at the ABK-Stuttgart. There is also a hand-sewn Afro bag from the Nilotika Culture Ensemble itself. The single itself comes in a gatefold cover and the outer packaging is lavishly embossed. Reason 4: This record is limited to 100 pieces. Reason 5: Of course the music. The track by the Nilotika Cultural Ensemble combines traditional Niyabingi percussion with melodic rap vocals by Spyda MC. The rapping is done in both English and Luganda, the national language. The Cologne producers Ancient Astronauts (active for more than 20 years) have delivered a remix of this track for the B-side.
The songs are absolutely suitable for the dance floor, so think about calling it your own, because the proceeds from the sale of the box flow into the direct support of the Nilotika collective.

02. Palmiyeler – Ben-Hür LP (Green Cookie)
When people in Germany talk about Turkish music, they usually only talk about the traditional variety. This masterpiece of relaxed psychpop proves that this does not do justice to the Turkish scene in any way. To say it right away, I'm in love with the Istanbul foursome. After the first notes I heard Max Groundstroem’s band Samling, not the American California Sunshine variant, but rather the melancholy Midsummer adaptation. All tones are perfectly minimalized and leave a lot of space for dreaming and indulging. Palmiyeler was founded as a trio before Barış Konyalı joined the band. Singer / guitarist Mertcan Mertbilek, bassist Tarık Töre and drummer Rana Uludağ released their first songs as a trio in 2015. Green Cookie has now combined various singles and 2 new tracks into their third album. Hopefully one day we will be able to enjoy the band live.

03. V/A – Alan Lomax's American Patchwork (Mississippi)
What a herd of bison at work. But from the beginning. Alan (born January 31, 1915, † July 19, 2002) was an American folklore and musicologist. Lomax devoted his career entirely to collecting folk music around the world, particularly in the southern United States. From 1978 to 1983, Lomax and a video team toured the American South and Southwest documenting traditional music. He documented the sound of miners and dodgers, the primitive singing of the Baptists from Kentucky, string bands and piedmont blues from North Carolina, Cajun cowboys with their violins and Zydeco stompers from French-speaking Louisiana, gospel quartets and chants by the railroaders and dam builders. This footage ultimately lasted around 350 hours and was edited into Lomax's "American Patchwork" series, which was broadcast on American public television in 1991. Given the time constraints of the format, however, hundreds of performances and convincing scenes remained invisible and unheard.
This double LP brings together some of the outstanding recordings Lomax has made, documenting the last vestiges of a bygone era in Mississippi, Appalachia and Louisiana. Intimate appearances by R. L. Burnside, Tommy Jarrell, Boyd Rivers, Napoleon Strickland and many others, reworked by Timothy Stollenwerk and never before released on vinyl.
